Moving On.....

Two weeks after tendering my resignation, my boss has finally decided to announce to the dept. I didn't wanna rush her into it but there are people who needs to know so that I can do my handover. I am also sharing with another 2 colleagues to treat our dept to a farewell lunch on Friday. There was never really intention to leave until I was offered this job. I am quite happy with my new boss and I can see that she appreciates my hard work. I know she is quite disappointed with my resignation but I have to also think about my future. Anyway when I was asked to go for the interview, I didn't think I would get the job. I was pretty surprised when they called me the next day to offer me the job. They were even willing to pay me that salary I asked for. I was already quite keen when they told me bout the job scope during the interview. When they offered me the job, I immediately took up the offer. My new job is definitely better than my current one in terms of position, pay, staff benefits & job scope. Furthermore, it gives me the opportunity to travel overseas for work. I have always wanted a job that allows me to travel. Alot of people tells me that its tiring to travel but I wanted to take this opportunity to learn when I am still young. I think the opportunity dun come easily. I know its gonna be a tougher job compare to my current job but I seriously hope that I can live up to the expectations. I am definitely looking forward to my new job and I will work hard to prove my ability.

Trying to act Smart???

I recently saw this in my brother YY's blog: "It's as good as to tell one if you don't know anything, just don't say anything. The worst can be that you don't know anything, you anyhow go around telling people that you know something or everything."
I have never doubt YY's perception about people or things. This time I will also agree with him. I do not understand why there are some people out there who always try to act smart and tell others that they know something or everything. Some even can foresee things that are going to happen even before she or the involved party is being told about it. There is no such thing as knowing things way before anyone else unless the person told you about it first or you are a fortune teller. Do not assume that you know everything and even if you do know something, it may not be true. Before you can confirm if its true, its best not to go around talking about it. The only way to confirm the truth is to ask the person involved. Its fine if you are talking about good things. If you are not, then you are indirectly ruining a person's reputation. Have you ever wonder if someone else does the same to you? How would you feel? Maybe some people dun think properly before they speak. But we are all adults so its time you start thinking before you blurt out some untrue things. Brains are for you to think and not to keep. Keeping it will only make it rusty so use it. I do know people who are like that and we always say that their EQ is low. But I am starting to feel that that's not a good excuse. If your EQ is low, then you have to learn how to manage it. Stop making yourself look like an idiot by telling the whole world untrue news. If you do this frequently, I believe one day you will get your retribution.

A year has passed.....

Today is actually the 1st anniversary of my breakup with my ex-boyfriend. On this day last year, I initiated a breakup with him. I didn't gave him any choice. He was pretty upset but I do hope that he is ok by now. We didn't really keep in touch. Maybe I didn't have the courage to face him. I also didn't want him to harbour any hopes for me. I hope that he can move on with his life and find a better partner. I jus feel that I am not good enough for him anymore. If I have to remain lonely for the rest of my life, I think I do deserve it. I always feel that it was my retribution for loosing such a wonderful man. My feelings for him were not there anymore and I didn't want to hold him back. I have since moved on with my life. I am happy with my current status although I do hope that I will find my Mr Right someday. I sincerely hope that he is also happy and doing well.

Past & Present

I heard a pretty interesting story from a fren on my way back home. Here is how the story goes:
There was a guy who have been with his girlfriend for many years and they were very loving. When they were about to get married, the girl left him for another man. The guy broke down and became very depressed. He started to drink alot & neglected his work. One day when he was drinking, a monk passed by and spoke to him. The monk showed him a mirror which he could see a story happening in the olden times. The story talks about a girl who got drown in a river and her body floated to the shore. A fisherman passed by and saw her corpse. He pitied the girl and so he took off his shirt to cover the girl before going off. A second fisherman came by and decided to dig a hole to bury the girl. The guy who saw the mirror didn't understand the story. The monk explained to him that in his past life, he is actually the first fisherman and his girlfriend is the girl who got drowned. In their present life, she was with him for the few years to repay his kindness of covering her with his shirt. But now she has left to repay the second fisherman's kindness (who is her new boyfriend) cause what she owes him is much more than what she owes the guy.
Guess the moral of the story is to tell you that we are all here in this world for a purpose and the things that happen to us are for a reason. We may not know the reason but we should not get depressed easily and neglect the rest of the people or things in our life. We also should not forced things to happen if its not fated to be in that way. There are still some thing things that we have to leave to fate. There are bound to be some debts which we have incurred in our past life and we need to repay them in this life.
If this is really the case, then I think I probably already repaid 2 debts in my present life. The first one has been fully paid. Not sure about the second one but think I must have owe him alot in my past life. I hope that I can pay back all his kindness soon cause I certainly do not want to carry forward this to my next life.

How do you determine a good Leader or Manager?

I just wanna share what qualities I think a person should have to become a good leader or manager in the company. I've worked for many bosses in my 14 years of working life. I've got both male & female bosses. Many people always say that male bosses are easier to work with. I have to agreed with that cause I feel male bosses are easier to get along and they are not that picky. But it doesn't mean that female bosses are not good. It all depends on whether they have the good qualities of a leader.
I've got a very good female ex-boss whom I've worked with for many years. Why do I say she is good? That's because she is a true leader. She is someone who always never fails to reward staff who have done well. She is never selfish about imparting her knowledge to her staff. She also do not boss her staff around. Although she may be a little fierce at times, but she has gain the respect of many staff who have worked with her. She has also fostered many talented staff who are all doing very well now. I have learnt alot from her and I am truly grateful to have the opportunity to work with her. Even though she may have left the company, but she still show concerns for her ex-staff. My current boss is also good cause I can see her sincerity & generosity towards her staff. She is also one who is willing to teach others.
I've seen some managers who are unwilling to impart their knowledge to others cause they are afraid that the person will ultimately become more successful than them. This type of managers are the ones who have not got much qualities in them and also not willing to learn or do more in their job. If you are picking up new knowledge or learning new skills all the time, you will never be afraid of imparting some knowledge to others. There are even some who go around spreading bad rumours of colleagues who are better than them. I think this type of people have got no confidence & integrity at all. Even if one day you manage to climb to the top of the corporate ladder, you may not gain the respect of your subordinates. I always believe that you gain respect by showing others how good you are in your work. Those who only knows how to talk but no action will not gain any respect. As a leader, you have to lead by example. If you can't do that, then you are just a worker and not a leader. You will never become successful unless you are super lucky.
It's good to have high aspirations in life but never be overconfident. You should always look at your own ability first. A person who think over highly of herself will fall badly one day. Never think that you are indispensable in the organisation. Your work can be easily taken over by another person so long the person is willing to learn. There were many times that I picked up the skills in my work from scratch cause there were no one there to teach me how to do it. That's why I always tell myself that if I ever leave an organisation, I will make sure that I write down my work procedures so that the next person who takes over will not be lost. You cannot bring all your knowledge with you to your next job. You can only bring along with you some basic knowledge & skills as well as your good attitude. These will be good enough to bring you far. So for those who are already leaders or aspiring to be one, never be selfish about imparting your skills & knowledge to others. Remember that one day you will get to benefit from it cause these people will help you to become a better leader.

Choosing a Job (Adapted from The Way of Youth by Daisaku Ikeda)

You have the right to decide what type of job you want to do. The choices are open. If you cannot decide what kind of work you would like to do, why not start out with a job you can get easily, something you are familiar with? That way you can gain practical experience and find out what you're good at.
Getting a job is just the starting point in uncovering your true ability; it is absolutely not the final goal. There is no need to be impatient. It is important that you make your way up the mountain of life steadily, without rushing or giving up.
When you decide what you want to do in the future, forge ahead purposefully. Do not be half-hearted. When you pursue something with strong determination, you will have no regrets even should you fail. And if you succeed, you can achieve truly great things. Whether you fail or succeed, your steady efforts will lead you to your next path.

What is True Love? (Adapted from The Way of Youth by Daisaku Ikeda)

True love is not one person clinging to another; it can only be fostered between two strong people secured in their individuality. A shallow person will have only shallow relationships. Rather than becoming so love-struck it seems only the 2 of you exist, it is much healthier to continue making efforts to improve and develop yourself while learning from those aspects of your partner that you respect & admire.

The renowned author, Antonie de Saint-Exupery wrote, "Love is not 2 people gazing at each other, but 2 people looking ahead together in the same direction." Relationships last longer when both partners share similar values & beliefs.

True love is not about doing whatever the other person wants or pretending you are something you are not. Someone who genuinely loves you will not insist that you do anything against your will or embroil you in some unwholesome activity. Without respect, no relationship will last very long nor can 2 people bring out the best in each other.

Men should be extremely courteous and caring towards women, respecting them and doing utmost to support them. The responsibility of men is to become strong enough, compassionate enough and adult enough to care about the lifelong happiness of their partner. For men who strive to cultivate this quality, it is also an expression of true love.

No matter how much you may appear to be enjoying yourself now or how serious you think you are about your relationship, if you allow your love life to consume your time and energy at the expense of your growth, then you are just playing a game. And if you are always playing games, then your life will be just that, a game.

Congratulations to Aliza

I know its a bit late but I would like to wish my "twin" sista Aliza who is 5 years younger than me a blissful & happy marriage. She has been planning for her wedding since last year. We've seen from the time her husband proposed till the day she got married. We are all truly happy for this small sista of ours. I hope that she will enjoy her life as a wife and maybe a mother soon. I was at her wedding on 3 Aug (Sun) and its truly a happy occasion. Her happiness were shown all over her face and we are glad to be able to witness such a special occasion of hers.

Teochew Porridge @ Goodwood Park Hotel

Went with some frens to eat the famous teochew porridge @ Goodwood Park Hotel on last Sat 2 Aug. I've heard of it for a long time but never had the chance to try it. The price is not cheap lor. It cost about $39 per pax after GST & service charge. Seriously I have never eaten such an expensive teochew porridge in my life. I wouldn't say that the food is fantastic. Even my fav chaipo egg dun taste as good as the ones I eat at coffee shops. And worse of all, the service there sucks. The Manager didn't even want to give us a table when he saw that we were dressed very casually until my fren told him they were hotel guests. There were many empty tables in the restaurant and the waiting list wasn't even long at all. I just think they looked down on us. Anyway the only delicious food that I tasted there is the durian crepe which is very yummy. But unfortunately due to my diet plans, I only ate one. Dun think I will go back to eat again. I rather eat teochew porridge at Hougang which is 3-4 times cheaper.

Lunar 7th Month - Ghost Festival

Time really fly, another year has past and the Ghost Festival is here again. This is busiest period for my parents cause my dad organise getais. I used to follow them around when I was young so I can say I am quite familiar with it. That was also what that aroused my interest in singing. I've been listening to all the pop songs at the getais during the Ghost Festival. I even had fav getai singer then. Some popular getai singers can make alot of money during this month. Some even become movie stars such Liu Ling Ling who acted in 881 and now 12 Lotus. I used to watch her sing since young but never expect her to become a movie star. Besides getais, there will also be alot of prayer & offering sessions all over S'pore. Our dept is also doing ours next week. We started doing it last year and will continue to do it this year to pray for smooth operations in the dept. Well, maybe I should go catch a getai this year since I haven been watching it since I started working. After all, its part of my childhood.
